Trauma reactions can feel like a bullying houseguest.
Trauma does not stay in the past, it impacts the present as well. Our brains use past pain to predict future pain and our lives can become consumed with anxiety or numbness.
We can become immersed in survival mode, with unwelcome surges of adrenaline resulting in fight or flight behaviors, or an appease, fawn or freeze response that leads to difficulty simply living.
When trauma healing is effective we begin to feel that the memories that used to engulf us become more neutral. After therapy client will say “yes, this happened, but it doesn’t hurt when I think about it anymore.”
Your full experience is welcome in therapy. By specializing in complex trauma we have chosen to inspire hope in those for whom trauma reactions have been a way of life for a long time.
You deserve to feel balanced, safe.
“Trauma is not a sign of weakness. It is a testament to our strength and resilience”
Dr. Peter Levine, Waking the Tiger
Therapy — and life! — does not need to feel monotonous, boring or rigid
Your voice and story will determine the route that therapy takes. We always develop a collaborative plan that may include guided meditation, inner child work, narrative processing or EMDR. Therapy – and life! – does not need to feel rigid, boring or monotonous. You might also prefer a more efficient approach like EMDR; still, my role as your guide is to ensure that EMDR or any other reprocessing work is done at an emotionally safe pace.
